The French Riviera may be famous for its coastline, but for cyclists, the real magic begins when the road points upwards.

Within an hour of Nice, riders can access some of the most iconic climbs in Europe. From legendary Tour de France ascents to hidden roads known mostly by locals, the region offers an incredible variety of mountain experiences.

If you're visiting the Côte d'Azur and wondering where to start, these five climbs deserve a place at the top of your list.

1. Col de la Bonette — The High Mountain Experience

If there is one ride that defines big-mountain cycling on the Riviera, it's the Bonette.

Starting from the Mediterranean hinterland, the road climbs steadily towards one of the highest paved roads in Europe. The landscape changes dramatically throughout the ascent. Forests give way to alpine meadows before the final kilometres open onto a spectacular lunar landscape above 2,500 metres.

This is not just a climb. It's an expedition.

2. Col de Turini — A Cycling Legend

Made famous by the Monte Carlo Rally, Turini is one of the great names of the Southern Alps.

The climb from Sospel combines long steady gradients with spectacular scenery. As the road rises through forests and rocky valleys, the sense of isolation grows. By the time you reach the summit, you've experienced one of the region's true classics.

For many local cyclists, Turini is a rite of passage.

3. Col de Braus — The Perfect Switchbacks

Few roads photograph as beautifully as Braus.

Its famous hairpins stack perfectly across the mountainside, creating one of the most recognisable cycling roads in France. The climb itself is approachable, making it an excellent objective for riders looking to experience Alpine scenery without committing to an all-day epic.

4. La Madone d'Èze — The Benchmark Climb

Ask professional cyclists where they test their legs on the Riviera and many will answer the same thing: La Madone.

The climb is neither the highest nor the hardest, but its consistent gradient has made it a benchmark effort for generations of riders. Combined with breathtaking views over the Mediterranean, it remains one of the essential ascents around Nice.

Ride: Èze & Madone

5. Mont Chauve — Nice's Local Favourite

Overlooking the city, Mont Chauve delivers maximum reward for relatively little distance.

The climb starts close to the urban area but quickly feels remote. As the road gains altitude, panoramic views stretch across Nice, Cap Ferrat and the Mediterranean coastline.

If you only have half a day to ride, Mont Chauve is difficult to beat.

Which Climb Should You Choose?

  • Looking for an unforgettable challenge? Ride the Bonette.
  • Want legendary Alpine roads? Choose Turini and Braus.
  • Chasing a benchmark effort? Head to La Madone.
  • Short on time? Mont Chauve delivers stunning views close to Nice.

The beauty of cycling on the Riviera is that there is no wrong answer. Every road eventually leads to a view worth earning.
