Couiza sits on the Aude river in the Pays Cathare, a region defined by the ruined fortresses — Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, Termes — built by both Cathars and the crusaders who eventually destroyed them.
The village has become a natural overnight stop for cyclists touring the region: routes arrive from Limoux, known for its sparkling Blanquette wine, and continue toward Rennes-le-Château, the hilltop village at the centre of the Abbé Saunière treasure legend, and the spa town of Rennes-les-Bains.
A 16th-century château in the centre of Couiza, now a hotel, keeps a fleet of loan bicycles for guests and a garage to store your own — a small sign of how thoroughly cycling has folded into this corner of the Aude's tourism.
From here, longer routes climb into the Hautes Corbières toward the Pic de Bugarach (1,236m) and the Gorges de Galamus, or follow gentler roads along the Aude valley — Cathar castles and Corbières garrigue rather than any single defining col, but a genuinely rich territory for multi-day touring.
