Feuerthalen faces Schaffhausen directly across the Rhine, close enough to the Rhine Falls — the largest waterfall in Europe by volume — that the roar carries on quiet days.
The town sits on EuroVelo 15, the Rhine Cycle Route that runs from its Alpine source near Andermatt all the way to the North Sea; through this stretch, the terrain is almost entirely flat, following the river past Stein am Rhein's medieval old town and the Rheinau Benedictine abbey, set on its own island a short ride upstream.
Riders following the route often note this section as the calm before Basel: from Feuerthalen onward the Rhine's gradient is gentle enough that the "sometimes steep climbs" of the upper Alpine Rhine are already behind them.
For a base, Feuerthalen offers easy, well-paved riverside riding in both directions — Constance and Lake Constance to the east, Basel and the Jura foothills several days to the west — with one of Europe's great natural landmarks a few pedal strokes away.
