Bellcaire d'Empordà

Bellcaire d'Empordà is a flat Empordà crossroads on the Pirinexus greenway, riding distance from Girona's cycling country and the Costa Brava.

Bellcaire d'Empordà sits on the flood plain of the river Ter, in the Baix Empordà — flat, open country between the Gavarres hills and the sea, and a stretch of the Pirinexus, the largest cycle-touring loop in southern Europe, linking Girona, the Pyrenean foothills, and the Costa Brava coastline.

A gravel route along the Ter connects the town north to Girona, a city whose surrounding roads and climbs like Rocacorba have made it one of European cycling's best-known professional training bases.

From Bellcaire, riders head south toward Torroella de Montgrí and the beaches of L'Estartit, or loop through the medieval stone villages of Peratallada, Ullastret, and Pals — a region better suited to long, flat days and café stops in walled towns than to real climbing, with the Gavarres and the Pyrenees both visible on the horizon for whenever legs want more.

This is the kind of place we write about every week.
